Cadbury devotees can relax

by dianaburrell on October 1, 2008

I read in the past day or so that Cadbury was recalling its chocolate bars after fears they were tainted with melamine. However, only Cadbury products produced in China are affected by the recall, and they’re being pulled from stores in Asia and Australia. No melamine has been found in any chocolates or products produced in the U.K. or U.S.

Of course it’s terrible that, yet again, the Chinese are under a microscope for another food safety violation. But those of us who adore Cadbury Fruit & Nut bars — the real ones made in the UK, not in Hershey, PA — can continue to savor them without worry.

Hi there, I hail from South Africa but have been living in the UK for about 3 months now. My absolute favourite chocolate when living in SA was Cadbury’s, consuming at least 200g of the stuff a week. In England however it tastes totally different. It’s so odd. The packaging is the same. The label is the same, and yet it just doesn’t hit the spot like it used to. Very dissapointing. Same goes for Smarties. Yuk. My kids are very confused by this – ha ha. Fortunately I have rediscovered Lindt chocolate while in the UK… heaven.

Aalize, so the SA Cadbury’s is actually better than the UK? What about it doesn’t hit the spot for you? Here, the Cadbury US chocolate is less creamy/more chalky than the bars I can get in England (or even Canada). Although thanks to globalization, there are quite a few places around Boston where I can get a genuine UK Dairy Milk fruit & nut bar.

Hi Diana, I guess for me SA Cadburys is more creamy and well, chocolaty, whereas the UK version is a watery super sweet and doesn’t make you want to savour it. SA Cadburys is a melt in your mouth milky kind of experience.

Ooo, I can’t wait to try the SA Cadburys!!! My brother and I are planning a trip there in 2010. :-)
